Hello and welcome to another versus. This post is going to be slightly different, we wont be comparing two different shows against one another, but instead different seasons of the same show. American Horror Story is the perfect candidate for this due to how different each season is, and how they focus on a different story inside this strange and gruesome universe.
As you can see, the average review score is very consistent between the seasons, there isn't really an outlier on either end of the scale. If we was to take something from just the averages alone, then we could say that the show has gotten progressively worse over time with a declining rating from season 2 onward.
However, what I do want to discuss is the shockingly inconsistent season 7, and why it is so inconsistent compared to the rest of the seasons. You may have to scroll to the right depending on your device and screen size, but if you look at the graph towards season 7, you would think that someone just grabbed a pen and scribbled madly.
I shed light on season 7, because not only is it consistent, but I think I know the reason why. Other shows show signs of this as well, but when it comes to reactionary content, and content that is based around social commentary as much as season 7 is, especially when it is as toxic as US politics right now, you are going to get massively varied review scores.
This can be because certain episodes might be focused on the message rather than the story. But primarily, I would bet a lot of the negative scores are down to the viewer base and their political alignment. Many people might think that American Horror Story is particularly liberal or has a liberal fan base, but I would bet that the viewer base is more even than you may think.
This is also a factor when looking at review scores because if an episode is particularly bad, or negative towards your views in the case of this show, then you are more likely to give a negative review than a positive review if the episode is really good. That is why you see so many outliers when it comes to the negative side of things compared to the positive.
This versus has ended up being more of a "Why season 7 is so inconsistent." But I feel like I needed to compare the season to the rest of the show in order to illustrate my point better.
